Abstract:
Introduction. Calcium silicate cements are used as dentinal substitutes in dentistry for direct pulp capping, sanation of root canal perforations, apexification, apexogenesis and retrograde root canal filling. The aim of this study was to determine the minimum concentration of strontium carbonate (SrCO3) or strontium fluoride (SrF2) added to white Portland cement (PC) required to meet the ISO standard of 3 mmAl for radiopacity (RP) of dental materials. Material/methods. PC+10%SrCO3, PC+20%SrCO3, PC+30%SrCO3 and PC+10%SrF2, PC+20%SrF2, PC+30%SrF2 were used in the experimental group while pure PC and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) presented control groups. Six samples were made for each mixture. They were radiographed digitally with a CCD sensor using an aluminum step wedge. Corresponding software was utilized for the correlation assessment between the gray-white scale of the samples and the thickness of aluminum plates. Results. RP of experimental mixtures were as follows: PC+10%SrCO3 (1.79±0.06mmAl), PC+20%SrCO3 (2.3±0.07mmAl), PC+30%SrCO3 (3.45±0,09mmAl) and PC+10%SrF2 (2.0±0.08mmAl), PC+20%SrF2 (2.31±0.4mmAl), PC+30%SrF2 (3.28±0.14mmAl), and for controls: PC (1.42±0.09 mmAl) and MTA (6.9±0.5 mmAl). The significant increase in RP was observed between both, PC+30%SrCO3 and PC+30%SrF2, compared to pure PC. All mixtures were significantly less contrasting than MTA cement. Conclusion. Only the addition of 30% strontium compounds to the PC resulted in satisfactory radiopacity
