Abstract:
Water is public property, a common wealth. The abundance of the water resources are limited. However, the need for water is continuously growing. Water is necessary for the biocenosis and humankind; it is a source of food and necessary minerals, a significant climate factor, living environment for many living organisms, a place for recreation and it represents a public wealth in general. Monitoring of the water quality indicators entails systematic measurement and analysis of the parameters or the processes in the surface water with previously preplanned program. Monitoring of in either the equal or unequal periods is conducted to establish the degree of the differences in relation to standard values. There are many ways to establishing the water quality indicators which look from different angles at the issue of the pollution of the surface waters. One of the most general and the simplest way is the division to biological and chemical monitoring. In order to establish the quality of Neretva river in the area of the city of Mostar, microbiological and physical - chemical water parameters have been analysed to discover the pollution intensity and its effects on human health. The study has analysed two periods, May and August, to find out the water quality throughout two seasons, the spring and the summer. In comparison to May, the values of the physical and chemical parameters of Neretva river have increased significantly in August which was influenced by the climate and ecological environmental factors, but water quality was still in range with first class of the water quality. The values of microbiological parameters of Neretva water quality show decrease in the quality due to the release of the untreated sewer waste waters, from the narrower city area to area of city Mostar.
